Cerro Tronador | Argentina

3 Days

The ascend to Pico Argentino at Tronador is one of the best mountain experiences to enjoy in Patagonia. A 3-day hustle with every bit of an alpine climb. Walking in the forest, sleeping at a mountain hut, walking through a glacier and its cracks and reaching the summit of one of the most incredible lookouts in the area.

Its history, location and surroundings make this mountain one of the most iconic in Bariloche and Patagonia in general. This ascent is one of those transformative experiences totally worth living. Especially in the company of one of our experienced guides.

This programme includes the ascent from Otto Meiling hut only. It can be combined with the Glaciar Alerce – Paso de las Nubes trip and even go down through Frias Lake, then sail from Puerto Blest to Bariloche. Do not hesitate to ask for a tailor-made experience.

Food in the mountains

We recommend packing your snacks of choice for those long days in the mountains. Same goes for your favorite beverages. Eating well is key for keeping your strength up out in the wild. And to cope with the loss of appetite, the best you can have is a wide variety of food at your disposal, from sweet to sour and salty. Carrying at least 2 liters if water is essential.

Accommodation during the trip

During our stay at Otto Meiling hut you will find all main services. The place offers a USB charging station, restrooms and other amenities.  You can choose between dinner, breakfast or even cook your own lunch for summit day.

Travel and rescue insurance

An insurance plan is mandatory to protect yourself from the unexpected. Check with your insurance company on the details about coverage and policies. Feel free to contact us for details or in doubt.

Day 1: We leave from Bariloche to Pampa Linda by car. The ride to the base at Tronador will take roughly two hours. This is the starting point for a trail that will lead us to Meiling hut (1890 masl). We’ll hike through the transition between the Andean-Patagonian forest and the Valdivian rainforest. A unique ecosystem, full of biodiversity.

In about 4 to 5 hours we’ll reach the hut, nestled between the Alerce and Castaño Overa glaciers.

Should we have time and energy left, we can practice on the glacier that very same afternoon. A great time to smooth out some of the techniques that will be helpful tomorrow. We spend the night at the hut.

Day 2: We begin early in the morning. Depending on the season, we may have the chance to use our crampons just a few minutes away from the hut, to cross the glacier. We’ll climb to the edge of La Motte, and then detour to “La Vieja”. On our way down, we’ll be searching between the cracks for the trail to “La Depresión”. This is our gateway to our climb to the saddle that connects Pico Internacional y Pico Argentino. The area close to the summit is the most technical with a small ice climbing section mixed with a 3-4mts rock one where our guide will secure the group from the top. The estimated time is about 7/9 hs to go up and 3 hours to go down approximately. It all comes down to snow conditions, the will of the mountain and the overall physical condition of the group.

Night at the hut.

Day 3: After a well deserved rest. We’ll share a juicy breakfast and, without any hurry, begin our march that will bring us back to Pampa Linda in the afternoon. Then we go back to Bariloche. End of the programme.

The programme hereby presented is estimative. If you have experience in trekking and your own means of transportation, you can join us for the ascent from the hut. It is possible to combine it with some hikes around the area too. We can offer you a tailor-made experience according to your objectives.
