Lanín Volcano | Argentina

2 Days

Lanin volcano is one of the most iconic mountains in Patagonia. It is one of those mountains you’ll want to conquer the second you spot it. It can be seen from 200kms away and it is easy to pick it out from its magmatic neighbors: Villarica (still active), Osorno and Llaima. An emblematic  mountain and one of spiritual importance for the Mapuche people. The view from its summit is beyond compare: Huechulafquen, Paimún and Epulafquen lakes, its neighboring mountains. We can even get a look at the Tronador on a clear day.

Climbing the Lanin is without doubt an everlasting experience for those who dare try it. This expedition is presented in its most conventional way, through its regular trail/route. Do not hesitate to ask for a tailor-made experience at Lanin.

Food in the mountains

We recommend packing your snacks of choice for those long days in the mountains. Same goes for your favorite beverages. Eating well is key for keeping your strength up out in the wild. And to cope with the loss of appetite, the best you can have is a wide variety of food at your disposal, from sweet to sour and salty. Carrying at least 2 liters if water is essential.

Day 0: Meeting in San Martín de los Antes with the team of guides. Pre-talk on accommodations, gear rentals and gear check. In the afternoon, general arrangements for the adventure.

Day 1: Vehicle ride to the Tromen Pass, right on the base of the northern face of Lanin. Here, the park rangers will run a check on everyone’s gear. On the first stage, after we climb for about 5 to 7 hours, we’ll reach one of the huts located at 2350 masl.

We’ll share diner and spend the night at the hut or in tents (depending on availability)

Day 2: We’ll begin way before dawn (2 am), and after a generous breakfast we’ll begin our summit attempt. Three hours into the ascent we should be reaching the “3000 masl Plateau”, where we’ll set our way to the Canaleta del Silencio (couloir).  This Couloir stretches through the northern face of the volcano and represents a straight line to the top. By now, the sun should be appearing on the horizon. The view is unbeatable.

Depending on the time of the year and on mountain conditions we may be using crampons and axes from the beginning of the day or only for a few stretches. The journey to the summit is estimated to take around 6 to 8 hours (3776 masl). After we celebrate for a while and share the quintessential summit photo session, we begin our descent to the hut area and from there, back to the base. We hop in the shuttle back to our accommodations in San Martín de los Andes.
