Volcanoes & Surf | Chile

We love sports and we love sliding, that’s why we invite you to this Volcanos & Surf Programme. The combination of these two sports, backcountry skiing and surfing, make up for a unique experience.

A 6-day journey through the volcanoes of the south of Chile (Casablanca and Osorno) and the lovely Pacific Ocean on the shores of Pucatrihue, San Juan de la Costa. It’s a 309 kms total trip, from Bariloche to the Chilean sea.

We leave from Bariloche to Villa La Angostura where we’ll be taking the Antonio Samoré mountain pass to adventure ourselves into volcano territory

We’ll spend the first night at the base of Casablanca. Second night at the base of Osorno. And the final 2 nights in a beautiful inn on the beach of Pucatrihue.

When at the sea we will have all the necessary gear for our dive (neoprene suit and boards) plus two days of surfing classes by the Surf School of Pucatrihue.

Food in the mountains

We recommend packing your snacks of choice for those long days in the mountains. The same goes for your favorite beverages. Eating well is key for keeping your strength up out in the wild. And to cope with the loss of appetite, the best you can have is a wide variety of food at your disposal, from sweet to sour and salty. Carrying at least 2 liters of water is essential.

Accommodations during the trip

  • Casablanca: Aguas Calientes Resort – Accommodation for up to 4 pax per cabin. Dinner and breakfast close to the resort.
  • Osorno: Teski Hut. Dinner and breakfast in place.
  • Pucatrihue (Chile): Inn in front of the sea. Dinner and breakfast in place.

Itinerary

Day 1: Bariloche – Volcán Casablanca

Right after we check and coordinate our fleet of vehicles for this journey, we’ll set a meeting point in Bariloche from where we’ll begin our trip to Villa La Angostura. Another rendezvous point will be set there so we can meet with fellow travelers from the area and cross the Cardenal Samoré Pass together. We are in Chile now.

A few miles away from the Mountain Pass, we’ll head towards the Antillaca Ski Resort, right on the base of Casablanca, which will be the first summit target of our journey

That night, we’ll stay at Aguas Calientes, a small cabin resort with its own thermal bath.

Day 2: Casablanca – Osorno

Our day begins with a good breakfast, and right after that, we’ll set everything up for our climb to Casablanca. The plan is to spend roughly 6hs between going up, having lunch on the top and going back down.

Once we’re back at the base, we’ll pack and get ready to begin our march to the base of Osorno, our second target on this programme.

Day 3: Osorno – Pucatrihue beach

Once again our objective will be to reach the summit, although this time, it will be Osorno’s (2652 meters above sea level). This one is a bit harder, making it a more technical climb. Nothing that we won’t be able to sort out with all the gear at our disposal (pick and crampons).

We’ll leave the hut early and aim for the top to then go back down enjoying a marvelous almost 360 degrees view on the way.

Back at the hut, we’ll set everything up again and head to our new home, an inn right in front of the sea. Time to chill and relax our legs a bit at Pucatrihue’s beach.

Day 4: Surfing at Pucatrihue

We wake up in front of the mighty Pacific Ocean and get set for surfing classes. Our instructors from the School of Surf will be waiting for us with suits and boards to teach us about this sport.

Classes will be held during the morning so we can keep practicing on catching some waves in the afternoons, or maybe just chill on the beach.

Day 5: Surfing and returning

On the fifth day, we’ll have breakfast as usual and take some time to gather all of our stuff for our departure at noon. Then we can enjoy our second surfing class or just lay on the beach and rest.

The trip back to Villa La Angostura or Bariloche is approximately 5-6hs long.

Day 6: Back up
